GUNDAGAI COMMUNITY BAPTIST CHURCH
Our Church History

Records in the Mitchell Library show that by May 1851 a Mr William Martin had established a Sunday School and regular Baptist worship services in "the distant and destitute locality of Gundagai" William Martin experienced much opposition to the work, though for what reason we don't know.

The church did not last long though, for one year later on the night of the 24th June 1852, the angry waters of the flooded Murrumbidgee River swept away all the original town with great loss of life. Old Gundagai was never rebuilt, but a new township sprang up on the slopes of Mt Parnassus.

We have no record of any Baptist congregation meeting in the new township immediately following the flood, but from 1938 to 1941 Rev A C Donaldson travelled over from Cootamundra to Davey's historic 'Dalkeith' homestead to minister to up to 40 people who gathered there to worship on Sunday afternoons.
Services at Dalkeith ceased during the war when Mr Davey died and Dalkeith was taken over by evacuees from a Church of England girls school from Manly.

The present Baptist congregation held its Inaugural Service on Sunday 25th March 1984 in the historic old Primary School. Twelve months later Pastor Chris Francis was inducted as the church's first Pastor. Rev Bob Prior ministered to the church from April 1994 til December 2000, except for short interim ministries by Pastor Steve Atkins and Rev Don Doull.

Rev Mike Anway and his wife Tania led the congregation from 2001 to June 2004. Our present minister is Pastor Steve Maynard who has lived in Gundagai for 26 years. He was inducted to the ministry of our church on 2 May 2005 and continues to lead us in our walk in Faith to this day
